Home Basics
You've no doubt heard about "Sick building syndrome", where air-conditioned office buildings with poor indoor air quality are the cause of numerous ailments amongst the occupants (like headaches, sore throats, coughs, fatigue, depression and more). But did you know our homes can be affected just the same?
The Environmental Protection Agency has stated that the air pollution levels inside the average new home in the United States is 2 to 5 times worse than the air pollution levels outside. Indoor air pollution from dangerous (and often toxic) chemicals has been linked to the dramatic rises in childhood asthma and respiratory diseases, and chemical sensitivity in adults.
We need to be aware that health and environmental concerns need to be taken into account at home too. Although we can't go as far as to build a new home for ourselves, we can make the best of the homes we have with a few simple measures - for example, choosing non-toxic finishes and natural furnishings to improve air quality, or changing the way we use energy to conserve natural resources.
